Obstetrics
What is an obstetrician?
Obstetricians are a type of physician who specializes in caring for women throughout pregnancy - before, during and immediately after delivery. They evaluate and treat women’s reproductive health concerns relating to any stage of pregnancy. Our obstetricians at UMMC compassionately guide women through the entire journey of pregnancy from conception to delivery, even directly postpartum.
About obstetrics and gynecology
Many obstetricians are also trained in gynecology to provide an extensive range of health care services for women. Gynecologists specialize in providing women’s reproductive health care that is unrelated to pregnancy. Combining both medical specialties, obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs) are highly qualified to provide comprehensive care for women during every stage of life.
Our OB-GYNs are experts who take a sensitive approach to women’s reproductive care. This care includes general wellness visits, the diagnosis and treatment of female reproductive concerns and specialized care for pregnant women. UMMC OB-GYNs generally see patients at our Grants Ferry and Jackson Medical Mall clinics.
Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants is home to Mississippi’s only dedicated women’s emergency and urgent care unit. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants offers state-of-the-art women’s medical care and serves as the primary referral site for the most complicated obstetric and gynecologic patients.
If advanced care is needed for complicated pregnancies, UMMC’s Center for Maternal and Fetal Care is the place where OB-GYNs work in collaboration with a team of expert subspecialists to provide highly customized care. This multidisciplinary team works together to care for both the mother and unborn child’s unique needs.
